Guidelines for Scorers

Guidelines for Scorers

Scorers are MATCH OFFICIALS, along with the umpires and timekeepers.

MATCH OFFICIALS should remain neutral throughout the match.

There has to be two scorers at each match, working together.

The scorer shall;

i) Record goals scored for each team as they occur

ii) Call the centre pass if appealed to by an umpire

Please ensure that you have the correct equipment. Your club should be able to provide you with a score pad and timer.

At the start of a match, the two captains will toss for ‘first centre’. The team with the first centre pass, will be EVENS and the other team ODDS

See below, Team A won the toss and are therefore EVENS for the first quarter.

Team A

Team B

As a goal is score NUMERIC NUMBERS (1,2,3,4 etc) should be written under the appropriate team – not tally marks. As a goal is scored, the previous number should be crossed out.

If the quarter ends when the game is in play, ODDS and EVENS swap over. (In this example Team A become ODD and Team B EVEN)

If a goal has just been scored, but the next centre pass not yet taken, ODDS and EVENS stay the same.

This is the case for each quarter. The scores should be transferred to the next box for subsequent quarters.

The umpires should take control of the centre passes, however, if there is a disagreement they will ask the scorers who should take the next centre pass. This can be checked by adding the scores together. If the result is an even number the next centre pass will be by the team deemed EVENS, if odd the other team.

A quick way of determining this is if you have two even numbers or two odd numbers, the result will be EVEN.

If you have an even and an odd number the result will be ODD.

Most teams like to know the score as they are playing. It is the scorers’ responsibility to call (loudly) the score after each goal. For example “Team A lead 12 : 6”. You do not need to read the score to indicate who has next centre pass, eg “6:12” if Team B have next centre pass.

If you are required to be a timekeeper for the game also, as most division do in Avon, remember....

  • The umpire will signal at the start of the game to start the stopwatch at the same time as she blows her whistle for the first centre pass.

  • At the end of each quarter you should move to the umpire on their sideline and let her know when the quarter is over by saying ‘Time’ – do not shout this from their scoring position. There is no need to do this at 30 seconds, or to count down from 10. Just a quiet ‘Time’ will suffice.

  • You may have to stop the clock at any time for an injury. For the first injury per quarter the teams get 2 minutes and the timekeeper should let the umpire know when there is 30 seconds left of the injury time – for a second injury where the teams have only 30 seconds the timekeeper should tell the umpire when there are 10 seconds remaining.

  • You may also have to stop time when requested for other things such as the goalpost moving or the ball going out of the court area.

  • You should time the breaks, 3 minutes for quarter time and 5 minutes at half time – you should tell the umpire when there is 30 seconds remaining in both cases.
